The Never Missing Mascara

Nowadays, the mascara is a never missing accessory. We use it daily and rate the importance of enhancing the eyes as number one in creating an attracting look. Few mascara users wonder how the idea appeared and developed. Its origin traces back to the antiquity, and the first mascaras were not as safe and easy to obtain.

Ancient Egyptians used mascara as a protection against evil spirits. The eyes are the ‘window of the soul’, so they applied mixtures of galena, malachite and soot as both eyeliner and eyelash color.

During the Victorian era they had to experiment with mixes of ashes and elderberry. It was the Victorian women who started to regard mascara as a means of enhancing the beauty of their faces.

Later, the perfumer Eugene Rimmel blended black coal dust and petroleum to obtain a cake mascara. The idea was further on borrowed by T. L. Williams who adopted the same package and formula but focused on advertising the product for the masses. He sold the black dye under the name of eyelash beautifier with explanations about how to use it and mentions that it could do no damage to the eyes. From there on, this cosmetic product started to conquer the masses.

As mascaras became so popular that women wouldn’t go anywhere without wearing it, the cosmetic industries released waterproof mascaras. You can know one by checking the water amount in the description: the waterproof formulas contain extremely little or no water at all. Besides that, the chemical dimethicone copolyol makes the dye stay put on the eyelashes when you are in the swimming pool.

When the wow effect of having black and thick eyelashes diminished, a new trend to wear colored mascaras started. Depending on your eye color, the good choices would be:
